Working together, Italo and Sergio replanted the vineyards and restored the farmstead. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Sergio a few months ago at a winemaker luncheon for a vertical tasting of six Rocca delle Macie’s historic cru wines made exclusively with grapes grown in their Fizzano estate vineyard.

Working together, Italo and Sergio replanted the vineyards and restored the farmstead. The vineyards have an excellent southern exposure at 985-623 feet above sea level and the mild Mediterranean climate contributes to maintaining the balance of the grapes acidity, sugar and aromas. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak.

My dad and uncle Fili worked in the vineyards on weekends, and I helped out as a kid. In those days, international sports figures probably didn’t have the same “influencer” status as they do today, nor the millions of dollars in endorsement fees. Vineyards are planted at a higher altitude, resulting in more acidity.

I am on the virtual road again, this time visiting Viña Ventisquero Winery with seven prime vineyards located throughout many of Chile’s wine regions. Since then, Ventisquero has expanded and diversified its holdings to include vineyards in Casablanca, Colchagua and Leyda Valleys and the Atacama Desert. Alcohol: 13.5%

The wines produced here come in a range of styles, influenced by the diversity of the climate and soil. Grapes are sourced from vineyards with soil of granite/schist origin and clay/loam structure. Alcohol: 13.5%
